COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A Midlands high school student got a big surprise along with her diploma at her high school commencement ceremony.
Jazmyn Michel saw her mother for the first time in two months when she graduated from White Knoll High School Saturday.
"You really can't put it into words. It's like such joy. There's no words for it," said Jazmyn.
Her mother, Master Sgt. Gillian Michel has been serving our country in Afghanistan. Once she learned she would be home in time for her daughter's big day, she decided to make it special.
"With the help of my command and the school and my family and friends, they made it happen," said Gillian.
"She's at my graduation," said Jazmyn. "She was talking about how she's not going to be there. She's here."
"I've missed a lot of my daughter's life being in the military as a single parent over these last 18 years," said Gillian. "So I'm overjoyed and ecstatic to be here for this moment that'll never make it again."
Michel and her daughter just have a little time to spend together. Michel heads back to Afghanistan in a few weeks.
Her daughter is going to community college in Florida.
