Robbery suspect who wrestled with victim in custody
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A man wanted for a violent robbery at a Richland County convenience store is held on $50,000 bond.
Deputy Curtis Wilson says Emanuel Udensi is charged with robbing a Kangaroo store on Rosewood Drive and South Kilbourne Road. Investigators say the victim was able to identify Udensi and he was arrested at his home without incident.
Investigators say Udensi entered the convenience store and hovered over the person in front of him. When that person, a 25-year-old male, tried to pay the clerk for a few items he had purchased, Udensi grabbed his wrist, took $100 from his hand, and punched him in the face.
"I was definitely at a disadvantage, that's when taking him down was my way of eliminating the threat," the victim, who wished to remain unidentified, said.
Eliminating the threat was a risk he was willing to take.
"When you're down on the ground like that I could've been kicked in the face, I could've been stabbed, I could've been punched."
Despite the risk, the victim called on his training as a wrestling champion.
"That training came second nature to me," the victim said. "It's what I've known. I've never been in a fight. This is the first time I was hit in the face. I was always told that if anyone tries to fight you, go to wrestling."
The victim says he was trying to hold the suspect there until deputies arrived, but the suspect's three friends fought him off and then took off with his money in tow.
"A lot of people don't have those kind of skills and a lot of times aren't ready for it," the victim said. "I definitely think I caught him off guard with it."
