COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A man posing as a legitimate roof contractor has scammed one neighborhood out of thousands of dollars.

Neighbors say he shows up at your door offering his services, gets the cash then never comes back.

Police say the man has swindled five neighbors in the Forest Acres area, who all say they want their money back.

Neighbors say this scammer is a smooth talker.

One of his victims, Evans Roach says she was sweet talked out of $2400, after giving him a down payment for a botch roof job.

Evans says Dennis Anderson, a shady contractor who calls his business South Fork Roofing offered to repair her roof, with no deductible, as long as she could cut him a check for half the cost of repairs.

"I was doing everything this man asked me to do," said Evans.

Evans later found out that Anderson had put shingles on the roof and left a festering problem underneath.

Evans then filed a complaint with the State's Labor, Licensing and Regulations Department, who fined Anderson $500 hundred for not having a registered license.

Forest Acres Police say that Evans wasn't Anderson's only victim, he scammed at least four other neighbors.

Another neighbor who wants to remain anonymous says he gave Anderson $2100 upfront to begin working on his roof and thought he was legit because he saw him working on Evan's home.

The Department Of Consumer Affairs say there's an easy way to avoid being scammed.

First, people can ask the contractor for a list of references.

Second, they can ask to see the business permit or contractor's license and verify it with the L-L-R

Evan says she's saving her money to get her roof fixed again.

Officers say that Anderson ran a similar scam in Greenville County.

Police say they are looking for Anderson and once he's found he'll be charged with breach of trust.
