Woman dies in car wreck after taking kids to school

LEE COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A mother was killed in a Lee County car crash moments after dropping off her kids at school Tuesday morning.

Troopers said a truck hit the woman when she ran a stop sign at Highway 441 and Green Lane.

WIS News 10 spoke to neighbors living in the area who said it has been a trouble spot for some time. "It's been at least one lady killed out there, and there's been a lot of other wrecks," said neighbor Jewel Smith.

In 43 years of living in her Bishopville home, Smith can't count the number of wrecks that have happened right outside her property line. "I wouldn't know how many to say. It's been too many."

She heard another one Tuesday morning. "I knew it was out there at the crossroads, and it scared me," said Smith. "I tried to see what was going on, but it was too foggy."

Troopers said Leroy Mack was driving a Ford Truck on Highway 441 and 30-year-old Harmeitra Jenkins was driving a Nissan on Green Lane. According to them, Jenkins disregarded a stop sign and was hit by the truck.

The coroner said Jenkins died at the scene.

When the fog lifted, Smith got a look at the damage. "The white car was completely smashed," she said. "The whole front was off of the truck that the man was driving. You could tell it was bad."

Smith said one problem at the intersection is limited visibility over the hill. "They lowered the hill when the first accident was when we moved here," she said. "It hadn't done much good, I don't think."

Smith said it took more than three hours for the roads near her home to re-open after Tuesday morning's wreck. Although she doesn't have an answer to what it would take to stop the crashes, she does have this advice when driving in her neighborhood. "Be careful at that crossroads," she said.

There is no word yet on where the victim was headed when the crash happened. It remains under investigation.
