(Fern Lake, Colorado) July 16, 2003 - Two men were hurt in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park when a black bear attacked a camp site near Fern Lake.

The campers were asleep when a bear tore down both their tents and mauled them as they slept this past weekend. Both men received head injuries, one from a bite and the other from a swipe of a claw.

One of the campers yelled and then the bear fled, giving the victims a chance to call 911 and alert park rangers, who are now tracking the black bear.

The victims were identified as Patrick Finan, 22, of Boulder, and Tim Schuett, 23, of Glen Ellyn.

Rangers say the attack on humans was a serious and unusual event. The last black bear attack in Rocky Mountain National Park was in 1971. That incident killed one person.
