COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens has a new addition to its lineup: a baby koala -- also known as a joey -- named Oliver.
The joey was born to the zoo's resident koalas, Lottie and Jimmy.
Surprisingly, the zoo says Oliver was actually born in April 2009, but they didn't discover his existence until October when he peeked out of Lottie's pouch.
The zoo says baby koalas normally go through their mother's birth canal to the pouch where it nurses for several months without making an appearance.
Riverbanks hopes to keep Oliver around for the next year to help it mature and grow. From there, they plan on transferring it to another zoo.
