SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Bond has been denied for a suspect Sumter police say killed a man with a gardening tool.
Officials say Reginald Antonio Gass struck 31-year-old Carlos Lincoln with a potato rake during an argument on Saturday afternoon.
Officials say during the fight, Gass struck Lincoln in the chest area with the rake. Lincoln was taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Witnesses said Lincoln had been holding a piece of lumber during the fight.
Police found Gass a couple of blocks from the incident location and arrested him.
"I don't know what happened, I don't know how it started, all I know is my child is dead," said Alfreda McLeod, Lincoln's mother.
Coroner Harvin Bullock says he believes Carlos was killed in one blow. He's says he's never seen a case like this.
"This is bizarre," said Bullock. "This is two guys arguing in the street and quickly it ... apparently somebody gets slapped with a rake in the chest and kills the fellow."
Gass has officially been charged with murder.
"I want Reginald to get what is coming to him, you just don't take somebody's life like that," said McLeod.
As a mother wants justice for her son, she can't make sense of the crime.
"I just love my boy and I miss him and I don't think it's fair, I really don't," said McLeod.
Gass' first court appearance will be Monday.
Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson does not believe any additional charges will be brought against Gass, but says the investigation is ongoing.
