Spring Valley student arrested, accused of bringing loaded guns on campus

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - On Thursday, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) announced the arrest of a student following an incident at Spring Valley High School.

At around 1:00 p.m., district security notified student resource officers (SROs)at Spring Valley High School that 18-year-old student John Cook had attempted to pass through the metal detectors with two firearms in his book bag.

Deputies said Spring Valley SROs immediately responded, securing Cook and his belongings. The officers then located two handguns in Cook’s book bag. Authorities say both guns were loaded, but neither weapon was stolen.

Cook is charged with two counts of Weapons on School Grounds and will be transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
