Sheriff Lott announces arrest in Meadowlake Park Mass Shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced two brothers are behind bars facing charges in connection with a mass shooting at Meadowlake Park over the weekend.

He says two 16-year-old brothers are behind bars in the juvenile wing at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The brothers are facing several charges including attempted murder for shooting into a crowd on early Saturday morning.

The sheriff calls them terrorists that have been on a shooting crime spree.

A hail of gunfire, chaos, and people scrambling to save their lives is what took place on Saturday, April 29.

Sheriff Leon Lott, Richland County Sheriff’s Department says “We have arrested two juveniles today that we believe were involved in the shooting. They are not all of the shooters. They are two brothers. They are both 16 and they will be 17 in five days. They will be charged as juveniles at this point so I cannot give out their names.”

The sheriff says their big break came as his detectives were working a shooting that took place at a Kentucky Fried Chicken on Broad River Road.

Lott says “We did a search warrant this morning. We arrested them on those charges, we recovered some weapons, assault rifle, and pistols. Our ballistics people were able to determine that the shell casings found at the shooting this weekend matches at least one of the guns we recovered.”

Eleven people were hurt, 9 were shot and 1 person was hit by a car while running from gunfire during the shooting at Meadowlake Park.

Another person suffered from a hand injury.

Sheriff Lott adds “They have been a two-person brother crimewave out there but that was put to a stop today. The community just needs to know we are making progress. We are not going to stop or slow down. We will continue to investigate. We will hold everybody accountable that was out there and was shooting into this crowd.

Sheriff Lott says he will ask the solicitor’s office to have the two brothers tried as adults.

Lott also says RCSD’s investigation continues and he expects more people to be arrested.
