Officials confirm tornado touched down in Clarendon County on Christmas Eve

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado occurred in Clarendon County on Christmas Eve.

The tornado happened at the Baggette Crossroads area in Clarendon County around 7:30 that evening. The tornado was classified as “a weak EF-1 tornado with estimated maximum wind speeds around 90 mph,” according to the National Weather Service.

Officials said the tornado tore off part of the roof and the wall of Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church on Hidden Branch Drive. The east side of the fellowship hall also collapsed because of the tornado.

The tornado also carried debris from the church a little more than half a mile and snapped pine tree trunks in the area.
