COLUMBIA, S.C. (TheBigSpur.com) - The South Carolina Board of Trustees met on Monday afternoon to discuss and then approve contracts for eight assistant coaches on the South Carolina football staff.
Seven of those coaches were already announced by the school as hires, pending Board of Trustees approval. The eighth, former Arkansas wide receivers coach Justin Stepp, was announced as well.
All eight coaches had their contracts approved by the Board of Trustees, meaning that first-year head coach Shane Beamer has just two more on-field assistant coaches to hire. Beamer also still needs to hire a strength and conditioning coach, which typically requires a contract above the threshold that would need BOT approval.
In addition to the strength and conditioning coach, Beamer still needs to hire a defensive coordinator and a defensive backs coach.
Here’s the list of contracts that were approved on Monday by the school’s Board of Trustees.
- Offensive coordinator/QB coach Mike Bobo: 2 years/$1.2 per year
- Offensive line coach Will Friend: 2 years/$700,000 per year
- Tight ends coach Erik Kimrey: 2 years/$200,000 per year
- Running backs coach Des Kitchings: 2 years/$300,000 per year
- Special teams coordinator Pete Lembo: 3 years/$450,000 per year
- Linebackers coach Mike Peterson: 2 years/$300,000 per year
- Defensive line coach Tracy Rocker: 2 years/$525,000 per year
- Wide receivers coach Justin Stepp: 2 years/$460,000 per year
Every coach on the South Carolina football staff is now on a multi-year contract, which is something we reported would be the case on Sunday evening. All coaches are on a two-year contract except for Lembo, who is on a three-year deal. Each coach who is on a two-year deal sees their contract expire on December 31, 2022. Lembo’s contract will expire on December 31, 2023.
Beamer had his contract approved by the Board of Trustees officially on December 15 and will make $2.75 million per year each year over the life of the five-year deal. Beamer, a first-time head coach who came back to South Carolina after spending the last three seasons at Oklahoma, was officially announced by the Gamecocks on December 6.
Bobo, Kitchings, Peterson, and Rocker have all been on staff with the Gamecocks in previous seasons. Bobo, Kitchings and Rocker were all first-year coaches at South Carolina last season. Peterson was a part of former head coach Will Muschamp’s initial staff with the Gamecocks.
Friend leaves SEC East rival Tennessee to join the Gamecocks after holding the same position with the Volunteers. Kimrey joins the South Carolina staff after spending 17 seasons as head coach at Hammond School, a local high school, where he won 12 state championships. Lembo, a special teams guru, held the same position at Memphis for two seasons. Stepp is also from an SEC program joining the Gamecocks after spending three seasons at Arkansas.
