IRMO, S.C. (WIS) - A man who went to an Irmo home threatening to shoot his ex-girlfriend and her family was shot by the homeowner instead, deputies said.

The shooting happened Saturday around 7 p.m. on Concord Place. That’s in a residential area near Broad River Road and Interstate 26.

Joseph James Harkless, the suspect, went through a break up with his girlfriend earlier in the day Saturday. He then threatened to shoot her and her family, deputies said.

Officials say Harkless went to the home of one of his ex’s family members and shot a glass patio door at the back of the house. But as he went inside, the homeowner shot him, deputies said.

Harkless ran after he was shot and stole a car that was left running and unattended in the driveway next door. He then drove to a nearby hotel where he asked them to call 911.

After getting treated at the hospital, deputies took Harkless to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He’s charged with three counts of attempted murder, as well as grand larceny.

The homeowner was not charged.
