Gervais Street closed as setup begins for Famously Hot New Year celebration
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Road closures are disrupting traffic in downtown Columbia as the city sets up for its annual New Year’s Eve celebration.
Drivers should be aware that Gervais Street is closed between Assembly Street and Sumter Street as crews begin preparations for Famously Hot New Year.
The celebration, now in its ninth year, boasts Salt-N-Pepa as its headliner and will also feature The High Divers and Columbia’s own Cottontown Soul Society.

A stage will be set up near Main and Gervais in front of the Statehouse. During the celebration, several roads will be closed for the street party.
Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. When the clock strikes 12, visitors will enjoy a fireworks show that organizers call the largest in the state.
Famously Hot is free to attend. A new bag policy this year requires visitors to use clear bags, or carry only a small clutch.
