COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A group of state senators is studying what South Carolina needs to do if it wants to increase the pace of widening interstate highways.

The Special Interstate Subcommittee met Wednesday for the first time, getting an overview of projects in the works, like widening Interstate 85 near the North Carolina state line and Interstate 20 west of Columbia.

State Department of Transportation Secretary Christy Hall also detailed future projects like the $1.6 billion to untangle the intersection of I-20, Interstate 26 and Interstate 126 in Columbia.

Hall says lawmakers’ 2017 decision to increase the gas tax 12 cents over five years and other fees are helping accelerate the pace of work, but some projects like widening I-26 from Columbia to Charleston or Interstate 526 around Charleston are still decades away.
