Piles of trash pulled from Lake Murray in annual cleanup

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Local diving organization Wateree Dive Center, along with Dominion Energy, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Richland County Sheriff’s Department and other volunteers teamed up to pull all garbage from Lake Murray on Saturday.

The cleanup was done by Scuba Divers on Sandy Beach. The divers competed in teams to see how much waste they could pull from the water.

In its third year, event organizer Andy Ogburn says they have pulled about a ton of trash from the lake. They also want this to be a reminder for people to keep their trash out of nature.

"It's all up to us. It's the easy answer to go on a boat, you can put a can in the water and let it sink to the bottom, that's just like throwing it out of your car window going down the highway. Let's take care of our Earth," Ogburn said.

Ogburn says they plan to hold 1-2 more cleanups on the lake this summer.
