Columbia man accused of stabbing his mother to death, stealing debit card, deputies say

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - Lexington County deputies say the man they arrested in connection to a homicide investigation was the son of the victim.

Deputies say J.W. Hayes Jr., 40, was arrested on Friday and charged in the death of his mother. The woman has been identified by Lexington County Coroner Maragaret Fisher as 60-year-old Jocelyn Murray.

Hayes is charged with murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime, according to arrest warrants.

“Based on what detectives have determined during their investigation, Hayes stabbed Murray with a knife multiple times sometime between Thursday night and early Friday morning,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Hayes then took his mother’s debit card and unlawfully used it after fleeing the scene.”

Hayes lived with Murray in the apartment in which her caretaker found her Friday morning, according to Koon. Deputies arrested Hayes without incident on Friday afternoon.

WIS spoke one woman who said she knew the man.

“Him being a person of interest is just shocking,” Kimberlee Binkins, who knows of Hayes said. “Because you see him walking up and down the street and he wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

Another person says she lives in the apartment right above where the woman died.

Zandra Crumpton, a neighbor said, “I’ve been out here for a while and I’ve never had any problems out here. It’s heartbreaking to see something like that to happen when it’s so close to home.”

Hayes is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center while he awaits a bond hearing.
