Columbia Police IDs 2 killed in Skyland Drive shooting

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The Columbia Police Department is investigating a shooting where two people were killed Saturday.

The shooting happened at 221 Skyland Drive and investigators worked through the night as a part of their investigation, police said.

CPD and the Richland County Coroner’s Office have identified the victims as 23-year-old Mary Carmichael and 26-year-old Jahquan Peterson. Both were shot in the upper body, police said.

No suspect description was given by police.

Phylicia Nelson, 7, describes the startling sound she and her family thought they’d never hear.

“I heard one boom, it said boom, and then I woke up and then I run downstairs and said momma, ‘I heard a boom like boom,’” Phylicia said.

Another neighbor described the incident.

"We were just upstairs and she was at the window looking, and I told her close the window and she was pretty scared and wouldn’t go to sleep, everybody stayed up until about 4 a.m.,” neighbor Caludette Moody said.

A friend of the male victim described him as a “good-hearted guy, humble, took care of business, loved his girl very much.”

“It really hasn’t even sunk in yet," Kenny Garrett said. "I can’t paint nothing that you know I really don’t know how to feel about it.
