Isle of Palms appoints new police chief
Kevin Cornett began his career in Columbia

ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) - The Isle of Palms City Council appointed a new police chief at a special meeting Monday night.

Kevin Cornett’s first day on the job as the new chief is Monday, June 3.

“We are excited to welcome Kevin to the City family and look forward to seeing the department flourish under his leadership”, said Mayor Carroll.

Kevin Cornett has been the chief of Police for the town of Springdale, South Carolina since 2012. Back in April, he was interviewed by both the Personnel Committee and the Public Safety Committee on Isle of Palms. A public meet and greet was also held back in April.

“There was a lot of excitement at the department who the next chief is going to be and what they’re going to do making positive changes for the department,” Isle of Palms Capt. Jeffrey Swain said.

Cornett wasn’t the only candidate up for the job.

Charles “Andy” Robinson, Chief of Police of York Police Department, Joseph Count, Captain of Criminal Investigations for the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, and William “Randy” Joyce, the Police Major for Fairfax County Police Department were all interviewed back in April.

According to the town of Springdale website, Cornett began his career with the City of Columbia Police Department.

Cornett will take over a department which has faced some issues over the past few months which has included officers resigning and concerns about staffing shortages, all of which has put traffic enforcement lower on the list of priorities.

In the police department’s annual monthly traffic review, it shows there were less traffic stops compared to March of 2018.

The report shows traffic stops were down 77 percent in 2019 compared to that same time last year.

The number of DUI and DUS tickets have also gone down by 100 percent.
