COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Saturday was a big day for the Killian Park basketball team.

The squad representing Richland County Recreation and Parks unveiled their championship banner after capturing the state title in the South Carolina Athletics Program tournament.

"They were so excited, some were crying,” said Coach Dan Perkins. “The parents were crying. Everybody bum-rushed on the floor, had a good time, so I think they were pretty proud of themselves. They got to do something that hasn't happened."

The players first earned the opportunity to play in the state tournament by beating teams from Columbia, Lexington, and other nearby areas to win the district tournament.

From there, the team was defeated some of the best teams in the state to give Killian Park its first state basketball title.

The Killian Park team is made of players from ages 13 to 15.
