COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook held a joint news conference on Wednesday.
The departments reviewed the year-to-date progress of the Violent Crime and Gun Initiative Task Force.
RCSD and CPD officers formed the task force to target illegal guns in Columbia and Richland County.
One thing law enforcement leaders stressed the most was the importance of securing your guns.
They also said they’ve seen a decrease in stolen guns. Sheriff Leon Lott said the number of guns stolen dropped from 1,029 to 922.
According to Chief Holbrook, the city initiative is working but there's still work to be done.
Law enforcement leaders say the nearly 400 of guns recovered were stolen from vehicles.
Chief Holbrook and Sheriff Lott confirmed that they will continue the task force.
