SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A 3-year-old child was injured after a tree fell onto a home in Sumter County.
The tree came down onto a mobile home on Blanche Road. Crews arrived on the scene around 2:45 p.m. on Friday.
Neighbors say the child was playing inside the house and became pinned underneath the tree when it snapped. They say it took about 20 minutes to get the child unpinned and out of the house.
According to a Sumter County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, the child was the only one injured in the home and has been taken to the hospital. The spokesperson said the child is in “stable but still in critical condition” as of Saturday afternoon.
Neighbors say the wind was strong, and frightening. Kim Williams lives a street over from where the pine tree sliced through the mobile home.
“The lights were flickering and all of a sudden I heard a noise, it was so loud it was just like something just broke in half.” Williams said. “He got out helpless. It just had me so emotional,” Williams said.
No other injuries have been reported in the area. Neighbors have also expressed worries that with more tall trees in the area, they could all be at risk for something similar.
“It’s terrifying I just moved out to this neighborhood it’s sad you know I heard there was a baby in there.” Carlos Bing, who lives nearby said. “This is a sign to get some of these trees cut down so everyone else will be safe and we won’t have to go through this again.”
