COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - South Carolina freshman guard AJ Lawson has declared for the NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-6 guard was the Gamecocks’ second-leading scorer averaging 13.4 points per game with 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per contest.

"Thank you to the fans, coaches, staff and my teammates for a fantastic freshman year," Lawson said. "I want to thank God for his blessings. The NBA has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I have decided to explore my possibilities. I will not be hiring an agent, but will be entering my name in the 2019 NBA Draft."

Lawson was named to the SEC’s All-Freshman team after posting six games with 20 or more points for the Gamecocks. In total, Lawson scored in double figures 18 times this past season.

Lawson has not hired an agent. That allows him to remain eligible to return to Carolina if he chooses to do so. He will have 10 days following the NBA Draft Combine, which begins on May 14, to remain in the draft or return to South Carolina.
