COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - In this month’s Family for Life, we’re introducing you to a kid who gave up on adoption.
Luciano is 15 years old now and has always heard adoption just doesn’t happen for older kids. He decided to tough it out and conquer life on his own, but then something happened to convince him to take a chance on love instead of aging out of the system.
Once you get to know Luciano, you’ll learn he has really big dreams and he’s pretty amazing in the kitchen. His favorite meal to cook is smothered pork chops with gravy and rice.
Luciano impressed everyone during his visit to Chef J’s kitchen. Truth be told, he really isn’t feeling this interview but he decides to take a chance on us - and we’re so glad he did!
This young man has big plans.
"I want to go into the Navy when I get out of high school," Luciano said.
And he has plans after the Navy, too.
"I want to go into construction, if construction doesn’t go I can either go into music or computer tech," he said.
He might be ready to work in IT now. He says a friend gave him a broken cell phone when he was 11.
"After like studying how to fix the phone you know I took it apart, and I put it back together and I got it working," Luciano said.
Luciano says the one thing people should know about his is that he never gives up.
Growing up without ever knowing his mom or dad has made him very independent and determined, characteristics he also admires in Chef J as they tag team in the kitchen. She tells Luciano she faced a lot of obstacles in launching her superstar career but like him, she never gave up.
"That’s the number one thing is we don’t give up we just keep going and Bill that resilience to the point that nothing or nobody can stop us," she said.
He takes that to heart just like something he heard one day in JROTC: "The 3 Navy cores are honor, courage, and commitment.”
Luciano tries to live those core values every day but being in the system is hard.
He decided he’d tough it out on his own.
"I didn’t want to like go through the half to face another family I was afraid of the results but they could’ve been the same of what I went through and I don’t want to go through the same thing but you know came across a guy named Hezekiah," Luciano said.
Hezekiah’s official title is caseworker but he’s become a mentor and encourager. He’s the one who convinced Luciano not to give up on finding his family for life.
“He kept on saying I’m not gonna let you age out of the system I’m not gonna let you," Luciano said.
Hezekiah says he didn’t want Luciano to give up on his family dream.
“Don’t you want to go somewhere they got pictures on the mantle, got stories to tell about you growing up, hopefully, those are things that hit him," Hezekiah said. "Like, 'I would like somebody to say those things I would like somebody to see pictures.'”
That’s what every child wants - including Luciano. He admits he does think about it.
“I do sometimes I really do especially when it comes around the holidays, you know when Christmas or a big holiday comes up I think about it a lot," Luciano said.
His silent prayer is that he has spent his last holiday alone. If your family loves to eat together, play together and travel together or loves the military you could be a perfect fit for Luciano.

- 4 servings
- 1 Chicken Breast
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 4 Tortilla
- 8 Tbs black beans
- 8 Tbs Seasoned Rice
- 4 Tb Avocado
- 4 Tbs plain yogurt
- 8 Tbs Mexican cheese
- 4 tsp fresh cilantro
- 1/4 tsp each of salt, black pepper, garlic, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne
- Preheat oven 375
- Sprinkle chicken breast with seasonings. Place in heated nonstick pan with olive oil seasoned side down. Sprinkle side up and cook 4 minutes on both sides. Place in oven 12 minutes. Take out and cut in dices
- Layer tortilla with toppings of your choice. Enjoy!
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1 Tbs fresh lime or lemon
- 1 Tbs fresh Cilantro
- 1 Tbs red onion
- 2 Tbs chopped Roma tomatoes
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 clove fresh garlic (chopped)
- Cut avocados in small dices.
- Mash but keep some chunks.
- Add rest ingredients and mix together.
- Add more salt to your desire.
- Serve with Blue tortilla chips.
