Suspect dead after attempted burglary in Kershaw County

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - One person is dead after an altercation following an attempted burglary in Kershaw County.

Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident just before 1 a.m. Friday morning near Hilton Street in East Camden. The first deputy arrived on the scene and found the complainant struggling on the ground with the suspect.

The deputy separated the two men and said that the suspect was not responsive. EMS was called and responded to the scene.

The suspect was pronounced dead and SLED was called to assist.

The complainant was cooperative and voluntarily went to the KCSO to give a statement to investigators, according to officials. He told deputies he witnessed the suspect attempting to steal property at his grandfather’s residence and began chasing him on foot. A physical altercation took place when the suspect was apprehended by the complainant.

At this time, the cause of death is unknown. The suspect has a history of heart problems, officials said. An autopsy will be conducted Saturday morning.
