COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A new coffee table book will captivate you as you turn the pages and step back in time. South Carolina’s Sacred Spaces profiles 70 churches and temples that helped shape the state’s history and culture.

Mike Bedenbaugh, the executive director of Preservation South Carolina, appeared on WIS TV to share the concern for preserving an integral part of South Carolina’s history. One that, if left untouched, could just go away. Together with author and photographer Bill Fitzpatrick, the book profiles numerous historic churches, temples and synagogues in our state. Bedenbaugh says South Carolina Sacred Spaces is a fascinating book that will take you on both a religious and historical journey into the Palmetto State’s rich history.

Writer and photographer Bill Fitzpatrick will have a book signing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. December 14 at Historic Columbia’s Candlelight Tours & Carriage Rides. That event is at the Robert Mills House & Hampton-Preston Mansion in the 1600 block of Blanding Street in downtown Columbia. Details at

The book sells for $70. All profits from the sale go to help preserve South Carolina’s at-risk sacred spaces.
