Woman's leg amputated following alleged neglect

MARION, SC (WMBF) - The sole caregiver of an elderly woman was arrested in Marion Monday after police say she didn't properly take care of her grandmother.

Lt. Farmer Blue with the Marion Police Department says 54-year-old Valera B. Lemon was charged with elderly neglect after police found 97-year-old Bell Beriges with bedsores so serious you could see her bone.

As a result of the neglect, Beriges had to have her leg amputated and remains under medical care at the Marion County Hospital. Officials say Beriges had not been to a doctor in two or three years.

Lemon's bond was been set at $10,000.
