Perspective: WIS Editorial on Families Helping Families

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - For eighteen years, our WIS family, the Palmetto Project, and you, our amazing viewers, have reached out to the needy in our community through our "Families Helping Families" project.  The program helps those who would have few Christmas gifts without your generosity.

Last year, more than 1,400 families and individuals received donated presents -- a warehouse full -- from caring people who bought, wrapped, and delivered them in the holiday spirit.

But this year we face some special challenges. Our global economy is in trouble, and the future looks uncertain.  And it's already clear that Families Helping Families might -- for the first time -- not meet its goal of providing assistance to all those who have applied.  If you can help, we need your help.

Please call the Families Helping Families phone bank here at WIS (758-1020) on weekdays between 9am and 7:30pm.  Our volunteers will be happy to explain how the program works, help you select a family to assist, or make a monetary donation.

Our partners in this massive effort, the Palmetto Project and all the volunteers,  do a terrific job. Thanks to them and to all of you who have already answered the call to help your neighbors.
