Perspective: WIS editorial on economic recovery

The doom and gloom of the global financial crisis may be distracting us from something you and I can actually do something about --  focusing on getting ready for the recovery.  Now is the time to take advantage of this unsettling period to retool and respond to changing needs with innovation and creativity.

Look at what Apple did during the 2001 - 2002 recession.  Apple recognized that the personal computer boom was waning.  So Apple found a new niche -- personal entertainment and communication devices. Using computer chips with a huge storage capacity and expanding broadband technology, Apple turned the demand for portable music and communication into a gold mine -- first, the iPod and now, the iPhone.

During the next few weeks, we're going to share some ideas to help you benefit from the inevitable economic recovery. We'll look at practical ideas in five areas:  food, transportation, health and fitness, individual creativity, and education.

We want WIS to be a catalyst for successes in your life.  And we hope you'll share your experiences with us via our website.

If we're persistent, Columbia can emerge from the economic downturn as one of this nation's best prepared, medium-size, metropolitan regions.
