Body found in Florence

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Police in Florence continue to have an area of the 500 block of West Evans Street roped off Tuesday night after a badly decomposed body was found behind a vacant home.

Perry Woods tells WMBF News he found the body Tuesday afternoon while cutting bushes around the vacant home at 541 West Evans Street.  He says he spotted the body in a wooded area behind the immediate yard of the residence.

Police say the body is badly decomposed and suspect that it has been there for a while.  The Crime Scene Unit is on location looking for more clues in the surrounding area.

Currently, police do not know the identity or sex of the body found on Tuesday.  Florence County Deputy Coroner Don Reynolds tells WMBF News the remains will be sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for an autopsy on Wednesday.  Police say it is unlikely that an immediate identification of the body will be made.

It is not being ruled out that the body found on Tuesday could be linked to the two bodies found on South Gaillard Street in Florence last week.  One of the bodies, according to officials, was that of one of three women reported missing in the area.  Authorities believe the second body found was that of another missing woman, but have still not confirmed the identity.

Officials say they are treating Tuesday's discovery as a homicide. Investigators have notified the family of the third missing Florence woman, Janie Mae Dixon, that a body was found.  Immediately, family members rushed to the scene on West Evans Street.
