LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) It has been almost a year since Lexington County teen Austin Whetsell died on a mission trip in Mexico.
Austin's father, Walter, is planning this year's mission trip to Mexico for their church, Lexington Presbyterian, in Austin's memory.
Austin's brother 10-year-old brother Trace will be joining the family Saturday for the trip. He hopes to continue his brother's legacy in Mexico as well as on the baseball diamond.
Austin was Trace's hero, and playing sports together meant everything to them.
"I knew that I want to be like him one day," Trace said.
Friday night, Trace will do something his brother never could - play for the all-star team. Austin was supposed to play for the team the week after returning from Mexico, but he never got the chance.
Trace takes the field as an all-star in his brother's honor.
"If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here right now," Trace said.
As the boy took the field, the crowd cheered him on along with his father, coaching from the dugout.
"You gotta play as hard as you can and do it for him," Walter said.
As he takes the field, Trace knows every moment for the rest of his life will be watched by his hero. It's a feeling that gives him hope that his brother will always be cheering him on in sports and in life.
