Gaston mayoral election postponed til January

GASTON, SC (WIS) - Residents in Gaston will be waiting a long time before they have a new mayor.

An election was supposed to happen Tuesday but town officials postponed it until January of 2009.

They say the reason stems back to the 1970's when Gaston was first incorporated.

Since then Gaston's mayor pro tem says only people who live within a one-mile radius from the center of the town have been allowed to vote.

Officials say they will use the extra time before the January election to fix that problem.

Earlier this year Gaston's police department was shut down after SLED started investigating the town's finances.

Then Gaston's mayor resigned citing health problems.
