Mother, three children killed in Dillon house fire

DILLON, SC (WIS) - A Dillon County family loses four family members in a single night after a fire tore through the family home late Monday.
A mother and her three young children were killed in the fire at a home on South 4th Street in Dillon.

"You never think something like this is gonna happen," says cousin Sam Lighty.
But Monday night the unthinkable happened when an early-morning fire consuming the Sowells home.
The family was asleep inside.

"I was praying they weren't in there," says Lighty.
Lighty's cousin, Curtis Sowells Sr., made it out.

"By the grace of god it woke him up. He said it was all black. He found his way out," says Lighty.
Sowells' wife Jennifer and their sons Laquan, Curtis Jr. And Darrell were still inside.

"He wanted to get back in there to 'em. He said he heard them crying and calling daddy. But when he tried to go back in it was just too hot," says Lighty.
The Dillon Fire Department says the front three rooms of the house were engulfed when they arrived just after 12:30am.
After containing the fire they made their way inside and found Sowells' family.
Now the neighborhood is coming together to support a father without a family.

"He's lucky but I'm sure he doesn't feel that way," says Lighty.
Sowells now has to plan for four burials. The family is asking for donations to help pay for the services. Donations can be made to Greenes Funeral Home in Dillon.
