What is your reaction to the foiled bomb plot at Chesterfield High School?

1st I want to say Way To Go Ryan's Parents you did the right thing by calling the law. You just saved Chesterfield High from another Columbine or VT Incident. Now my Response to Tl of Columbia: Beating your child senseless is not going to solve the problem this is why the authorities have to be called and the State had to turn a matter like this over to the Feds. Anytime anyone has any kind of bomb making materials the Feds step in and take charge whether you like it or not. I know I would want the Local, State and yes even the Feds to step in and protect my child from such a hate crime like this. Beating your child is not going to stop him or her from blowing up a school, place of business or anything else. If the child has plans like Ryan did beating him is not going to stop this kind of a plan its just going to postponed it for a little while and then well guess what maybe a month or so later well your child just blow up his high school or place of business. You know why because you tried to handle a serious situation like this on your own without the Police. Now you have the murder of your child + the murder of hundreds of students or co-workers on your hands because you did nothing but beat your child which ended up being no good at all. Thank you Ryan's Parents for doing the hardest thing in your life which is Calling the Authorities. If it were not for your Common Sense hundreds of Young People would have been Killed by such a senseless act. God Bless You and You are in my Prayers.

I would like to think that I would have the courage to turn my child in to the authorities if I knew of or suspected he/she was involved in a plot to kill anyone.
  • Tl, columbia
No, Because as you see with this case the Federal Government is putting its nose in state business. Beside the state would be charging me for beating my child after I was through with him. If I found out that his was planning this kind of attack.

When you make the decision to become a parent it is the best, most rewarding and challenging choice you will ever make. You try to raise your children to become well-rounded spirtually, physically and emotionally. Even though you would trade your life for that of your child, you are responsible to make sure that your child is making good decisions. Maybe turning this young man in was the only way these parents would have been able to get this young man the help he needed so badly, or maybe, just maybe, these parents loved this young man enough to help the others who would have died or been critically injured with this young man's plan. They are to be commended for loving their son enough not to cover his plan up or hide from the truth, but to stand together as a family and help their son.

I commend the young man's parents for turning their son in. It had to be truly heartbreaking for them. I shudder to think what the outcome may have been had they not called law enforcement.

This is to SF of Lexington it shouldn't matter if your child gets in trouble 0 or 100,000+ times its the job of the parents to act and do what is right and what is right is the parents turning this young man into authorities. You mean to tell me that if explosive material was shipped to your house you would not call the law? What in the world are you thinking. For Heaven's Sake this young man was plotting to kill hundreds of our children. This would be another VT or Columbine right here in SC. I know I would want someone to step in and protect my child & my nieces. I know for a fact if my child or any of my nieces were planning a stupid act like this I would not think twice about turning them in. But my heart goes out to this young man's parents and grandparents. I just can't imagine what they are going through right now. But I do not feel sorry for this young man. He knew what he was doing was wrong but he thought he wouldn't get caught. This young man had hatred in his heart pure hatred. Now that he's behind bars I hope and pray that one day he will find the Love of God in His Heart and his life will be changed forever. I just do not understand what is wrong with our kids I don't understand why their is so much hatred among them. If kids are beating each other up they are plotting to kill them and my Goodness look what happen at VT and Columbine. This was pure murder. This guys ended up killing themselves so they would not be put to death by the electric chair. The young men who killed at Columbine & VT are cowards instead of taking all these young people's lives why didn't they just kill themselves and leave the rest of these young people alone so they could live their lives and be Doctors to help find a cure for cancer or be the next person to take a trip to the moon or the next President of the United States but instead they are dead and they are never coming back but their memory lives on forever. I don't want any of our SC campuses ending up like Columbine or VT. Our children should have the right to go to school/college without felling threaten or scared. This young man that was plotting to blow up this school in Chesterfield and he has absolutely lost his mind. Who know maybe he too has mental problems this was proven with the guy who killed at VT. But I cannot believe you SF of Lexington that you would sit back and handle something this serious on your own. Thank God not all parents think the way you do. What a sad and scary world we all live in. My Goodness what in the World is Going On.

If I turned my own child in it would save his life and the life of others. It would put him in a facility where hopefully he would get counseling and chance to straighten out his life. There are situations where a parent has to use tough love. A parent should be held responsible if they know their child is in a situation where they could hurt themselves or others and not report it.

Because If my child were involved in something wrong I would want them to get the proper help and pray that it wasn't to late. To many parents are not paying enough attention to there children ,And we wonder what is wrong with kids these days we need more parent involvement and for them to stop looking the other way.......
  • PS, Whitmire
I applaud the parents for what they did. They saved a lot of innocent lives.I hope that the child can receive help for what he was wanting to do.May God help him and help you all. You did the right thing. Thank you

The real and only heros are the parents who did the right thing. I have pity but no sympathy for the young man who appearantly wanted to kill many innocent students/teachers for nothing.
  • JD, Gaston
Yes I would, because if you knew he was going to do it and didn't do nothing about it, you could be indicted too.

While I do think that WIS does a great job of covering the news it troubles me to think that there was really something wrong inside that high school and this young man felt (I assume) that he had no other way of dealing with the problem. I saw all the interviews with the neighbors and some students but what was the real reason? WIS is a very powerful tool to these highschool kids what if there was a way for them to talk to WIS about bullies, things or students that make them uncomfortable/uneasy? I know we as parents always want our children to come to us but they for some reason or another sometimes feel that they can't. Maybe if they had a different source they may trust a little better, and I am not talking about counsler's or principle's and I certainly don't suggest that you put them on TV every night at 6:00 just give them another outlet who knows if this young man with a future just last week would have had another outlet he may not be wearing an orange jumpsuite tonight...

The real heroes in this story (for the moment anyway) would seem to be Ryan Shellenberger's parents. Turning their son in to the authorities rather than trying to protect him demonstrates an unusual degree of selflessness and regard for the common good of the whole community. Their action also demonstrates an ability to choose what will be best for their son in the long run, rather than giving in to the temptation to avoid the immediate pain of having him arrested. My only question, and one I am quite sure Ryan's parents are asking themselves right now, is how could they have not known about this plot happening right under their noses until it was nearly too late?

I think any parent who knows their child is breaking the law is right to turn that child into police and let them handle the matter. You would probably do the same thing if it were someone else's child.
  • SF, Lexington
If my child was a wild hellyun and usaully performed bad behavior then, yes I would turn them in. But if my child was always good and never really got into much trouble I would feel obliged to handle the situation on my own circumstances.

I believe a parent would have to turn their child in if they found out that he/she were planning a violent attack. You would want to save your child plus the lives of others. My hear does go out for the parents of that young man - they showed such courage, strength and love for fellow man. I also have sympathy for that young man because it does not sound as if he were the type one would suspect of such an act. I hope he gets the help he needs. I also hope the friends of his family will surround them to help them through this very difficult time that they must surely be going through. My prayres are with them.

Because I wouldn't want innocent people hurt because of my child's actions.

Yes I most definitely would tell on my child and turn her into the authorities if she was plotting something like this. My gosh who wants another Columbine or VT incident. I cannot believe my ears what in the world is happening to our young people have they all gone slap darn crazy. Just because someone picks on you or ignores you or makes fun of does not give you the right to go and kill or hurt them. Thank God for this Kid's parents and getting involved if they had not of stepped in hundreds of students, teachers/faculty would have been hurt, wounded or worse killed. I can't understand what is going through this young man's mind. From the interviews he's a smart kid with a bright future and now he's thrown it all away. He has nothing but a orange jumpsuit and 4 block walls. I don't understand and people have the nerve to walk up to me and ask me why am I homeschooling well uh duh this is the main reason. I want my child safe. And if anything bad happens in our school district well its not reported. It's like its a big cover up so this little small town can get more tourists/visitors and I myself am fed up with it but no one will help me or back me so I like everyone else keep my mouth shut. I just don't understand I really don't get our young people taking guns, knives/weapons and now bombs to school. I am scared to death to have my child in a classroom of any kind. Thank God oh Thank you Lord for the internet so my child can take college courses from home. But if things keep going no one will be able to work outside of our homes and want be able to go to the stores to buy anything we'll have to have our good delivered to us. Something has go to change oh my goodness what a scary world we all live in. Maybe my brothers are others are right maybe the Lord is coming sooner than we think.
