COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Two Midlands men serving with the 218th Brigade Combat Team received a high military honor Friday.

Sergeant James King of Gaston was awarded the Bronze Star in a ceremony Friday in the Midlands.

King was deployed to Afghanistan from June 2005-2006.

Sgt King received the award for mentoring members of the Afghan National Army and for his reaction when his convoy was hit by a suicide bomber.

Staff Sergeant William Simpson of Columbia also received the Bronze Star Friday, while serving with the 218th in Afghanistan.

"[We are] very proud of him and all of the brave men and women serving our country. We appreciate their sacrifice and that of their families as well," SSG Simpson's family told WIS News 10.
