It's about time.
It's about time that the dash cam videotape of a state trooper threatening to kill a black suspect and using a racial slur during a traffic stop, became public.
It's about time that Governor Sanford saw it, and it's about time that the leadership of the Department of Public Safety took responsibility for the incident.
But what took so long?
It happened in December 2004. Black leaders have been hearing rumors about the incident for years. They say they haven't been able to get anyone's attention about charges of unfair treatment of black motorists by the Highway Patrol.
Well, they've got people's attention now. And there may soon be legislative hearings about the incidents and department policy.
We hope this means changes for the department: like zero tolerance for racial discrimination, like systems and training to prevent similar incidents, and quick and serious action against violators.
That's our Perspective. What's yours?
