RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The Richland County Sheriff's Department is teaming up with the Columbia Fire Department and Lowe's to help the elderly protect themselves from fire.
In the coming weeks, 300 fire extinguishers will be distributed to elderly people who need them.
Retired deputies routinely check in on hundreds of older residents.
Sheriff Leon Lott says, "These gentlemen in the gray shirts, the retired police officers, they go out and visit our seniors. And what we want to do is make sure that they stay safe, not only during the Christmas season, but all the time. So, through Lowe's, we've got 300 fire extinguishers that we're going to go, and we're going to place in their homes, the ones that don't have a fire extinguisher."
Those who receive a fire extinguisher will also be taught how to properly use it.
