Are recent noose-related stories just pranks, or are serious racial issues involved?
PH, Dalzell I blame the news media for the recurrence of the noose situation. I challenge all news media for one week to omit any details of all crimes. If photos of suspects need to be shown, then show them, but leave out the gory details. We have become a nation that mimicks the actions of others- so why not show the good- for one week.
JR, Columbia Lets all ignore the history of nooses and hanging and put those words on the "do not say list". Then, get over it and get a life. None of this was invented in the south.
RP, Lexington Move on from the noose stories. Their are more important things to talk about.
LR, Columbia I think DT of West Columbia hit the nail on the head!
MH, columbia I think the news media like wis, wltx, wolo should quit fuelling the fire!! if they really wanted to help they would focus more on the clownâ€TMs running this sorry state thatâ€TMs ripping the taxes payers off!! instead of a peace of rope thatâ€TMs not stealing peopleâ€TMs money or hurting any one we might could get raid of the unreal property taxes, auto taxes wake up sc!!! m.h.
CK, Columbia I believe they are just stupid pranks being done by "copy cat" idiots just trying to get attention or get mentioned on TV.
KD, Lexington I can only hope these are pranks...please tell me there isn't that much hate in someone to really want to hang another human.
aw, Lexington I think this has gone too far, a noose is not a racial thing. Look at the movies, western movies, pirate movies, etc., there are people of all race and ages being hung by nooses. So get over it, lets move on.
CW, Sumter,SC How many of you have made a noose just playihg around?I have and i didn't have any ulterior motive other than passing time.I think to many people are trying to make an issue out of nothing.
PV, Gaston They are just a prank, immature people following the Jena 6 incident and the hype of the media.
cf, Columbia "Hate crimes (also known as bias motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership in a certain social group, usually defined by race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation. Hate crimes differ from conventional crime because they are not directed simply at an individual, but are meant to cause fear and intimidation in an entire group or class of people." SC does not have "hate crime" statues. Pranks are GOOD NATURED JOKES. Nothing good natured in nooses.
DT, West Columbia To know their motives we would have to hear from those who actually hang the nooses. Some are no doubt motivated by malice, but I think most are adult expressions of schoolyard taunts. As kids most of us learned that if someone showed especially strong reaction to a certain taunt they would get more of it â€" not less. I think something similar is happening here. The perceived over-reaction by blacks to the noose is bound to elicit more of the same - not less. As I recall, on the schoolyard the best way to combat such taunts was to deny the teasers the reaction they expected. I think the same solution might apply in this case as well.
