Your memories of John Fling

Below are some of the responses that WIS viewers have sent in to share about John Fling:

  • DP, West Columbia
Martha and I along with Chapter D of the GWRRA worked along with John during the previous two years to provide food to the Federation of the Blind. We will truly miss seeing John each November as we worked to put this donation together.
  • TS, Colmbia
I went to church with John Fling's sister as a child growing up. He always "played" Santa for the church Christmas party. He will be missed by many. He was a good man.
  • PG, West Columbia
Mr. Fling was truly the one of the good guys. He helped me after my divorce a while back. I had no money and had no idea how to give my son a christmas and along came Mr. Fling. He will be sorely missed by not only myself but the entire community he loved and helped. I am sure he would want people to donate food the a food bank in his name instead of buying flowers that will only die in this heat. It was his goal to help those in need and he did it.
  • MG, Columbia
He was an Angel here on earth. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time. Let us find ways to honor him by continuing his work.
  • EA, Greenwood
Mr. Fling was one of the first neighbors we met when we moved to the Earlewood community in 1987 as newlyweds. He was "Love thy neighbor" in living form. Mr. Fling loved for his neighbors to learn about his ministry and to get involved. He wanted people to see first hand the need to help others. We were recruited into his Sunday morning ritual of picking up the neighborhood kids, feeding them breakfast and taking them to church. Helping others was truly his passion. My family and I were blessed to know such a great and humble man.

I remember he used to stop by my house with a bus full of blind people. He said they wanted to "see" me.They would be on their way home from going "sight seeing" in the mountains. Most people don't know what a funny man he was.

I remember actually working with John Fling in high school. I was a part of Irmo's ROTC and we did so much to help his ministry out. He will be very much missed around Columbia. Especially by those who got to work with him.
  • NG, west columbia
When i was a little kid i was in kmart with my mom and my brother and sister. Mr. Fling came up to us and started talking. I guess he saw that we didnt have much and he gave all three of us $20.00 and said for us to go buy a toy. That meant so much to us because we werent gonna have tat much for christmas. He will be missed..

We went to many of Mr. Fling's motorcycle runs for the blind. Whenever he saw Margaret he always had a quarter to give her. Giving was what Mr. Fling was all about. His daughter-in-law, Mrs. Amy has been one of Margaret's teachers for the past 3 years so the Fling family is very special in our lives. Please know we send our sympathy and joy for having known Mr. Fling!

John Fling was a genuinely good man. As he said of the donations, "this is for the needy, not the greedy". He made such a positive impact on our community. He will be missed by many. My prayers are with his family. God Bless you John.
