Health and Human Services Director resigns

(Columbia-AP) March 29, 2007 - The director of the Health and Human Services Department is stepping down.

Robert Kerr says he will leave state government to form a health care consulting firm in Columbia. The 48-year-old Kerr led the agency for four years.

The governor's office says Thursday afternoon Robert Kerr has resigned from the position he's held since 2003.

The resignation will take effect in about three weeks.

Governor Mark Sanford says he hopes to have a replacement soon.

Sanford credited Kerr with overhauling the state's Medicaid system, which provides health care for the poor, elderly and disabled.

Kerr was chief financial officer at the department from 1999 until being name director. He also served as director of internal audit and compliance for the agency during his 22 years there.
