Ridgeway shootings leave officials puzzled

(Fairfield County) January 4, 2007 - At a rural home in Ridgeway, crime tape is still up. And what went down is still unclear. Carlon Castillo, 35, was found shot dead in his house. Not far in the woods was Christopher Fuller's body. The 22-year-old had been shot too.

Fairfield County Chief Deputy Keith Lewis has a theory on the crime, "It appears it could've been a home invasion or a robbery."

Lewis says Castillo was found in his underwear, so they think he was sleeping when Fuller and someone else broke in through a window. Fuller was found fully dressed.

But officials are having difficulty finding another man who they think was involved. Lewis says, "We don't know anything about the identity of this third person. There was some information about a guy called 'Dred' who was at the residence earlier that night. We're trying to find Dred."

Local investigators will meet this week with the other man they think might have answers. Lewis says Castillo's cousin witnessed the gunfight, escaped unharmed, hid in nearby bushes and then took off to New York after calling relatives there - not authorities. That has officials like Lewis wondering, "That's the question we're waiting to ask him. The New York Police Department has interviewed him for us. We talked to him on the phone and he has agreed to come back to South Carolina."

Meanwhile, a county over, at a home in Columbia, Christopher Fuller's great aunt and grandmother stand by the boy they raised, despite authorities saying he could be behind the robbery. Helen Fuller tells WIS, "Chris was nice, quiet side. He didn't bother nobody. He didn't pick on nobody. He was a good boy."

Annie Carson says Fuller's mom saw her son at home the night before he died, "Some young man picked him up and he went with them and that was the last time she had seen her son."

Between Fullers' family and Fairfield County deputies, no one seems to know who the other man is. But what we do know is both men killed have criminal histories, information that could help solve what officers say is a puzzling case.

If you have any information about the shooting, call the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department at 635-4141.
