Man dies in North Charleston shooting

(North Charleston-AP) December 22, 2006 - North Charleston police are investigating another shooting death.

Authorities say 41-year-old Michael A. Smyth was able to drive a short distance away before crashing his car after he was shot in the head Thursday morning.

Authorities say Smyth died about 12 hours later at a hospital.

Lieutenant David Bollinger says a passenger in the car was wounded.

Police say 22-year-old Rico St. Clair Calvin was arrested at his home shortly after the killing and has been charged with murder. Calvin also is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and distribution of a controlled substance near a school.

Smyth's death is the 29th homicide this year in North Charleston.
