Teen found dead in Kershaw County home

(Kershaw County) December 14, 2006 - Neighbors in the Kershaw County town of Elgin say they're nervous after a teenager was found murdered in his house there.

Roberta Knappenberger is a long way from her roots and family in Pennsylvania. But after 20 years on Ryan Lane near Elgin, she's learned about life in the deep South. And she knows what's going on in her neighborhood.

Knappenberger admits she did not know much about the young man who lived across the gravel road. Only that he moved in sometime over the summer, drove too fast sometimes, and seemed to have a lot of visitors.

"Cars went in and out all the time - a lot of them. All hours, because I sit on my porch quite a bit. I can see a lot."

Wednesday night, someone entered the home and killed the young man, possibly during a break-in. The motive of the killing is still unknown, but police think a baseball bat may have been used in the murder.

His office says Sheriff Steve McCaskill was out following leads and not available to provide specifics on the case. But the Kershaw County Coroner identified the victim as 19-year-old Josh Zoch. An autopsy late Thursday morning lists the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.

Unofficially, News 10 was told Zoch's girlfriend found the body. The sheriff's department could not provide a written report on the incident.

Investigators say the intruder forced open the side door. The house was ransacked, but nothing was missing.

For Knappenberger, Ryan Lane is now a different place.

"I don't like the thought of something like this happening here because it scares me. I keep my doors locked," said Knappenberger.

No suspects are known to be in custody.
