Agency chief at SC transportation department says chairman is trying to wreck agency

(Columbia-AP) October 27, 2006 - The director of the state Transportation Department is accusing her commission's chairman of trying to destroy the agency for political reasons.

Elizabeth Mabry's comments came just a week after Tee Hooper told her at a board meeting that he would ask her to resign if he had the authority.

Mabry fired back in an opinion article and accused Hooper of being under the control of Governor Mark Sanford. Sanford appointed Hooper as commission chairman three years ago.

Mabry says Hooper wants to discredit the agency so the governor's office can take control of it.

A spokesman for the governor says Mabry should not blame Hooper for the agency's problems.

A much-anticipated state audit of the agency is expected to come out next month.
