Charleston man arrested in the Netherlands on drug charges

(Charleston-AP) July 20, 2006 - A Charleston man wanted on drug charges has been arrested in the Netherlands.

The US Marshal Service says 65-year-old Joe Ambrosia was arrested Wednesday morning in Amsterdam.

Deputy US Marshal Tim Stec says a fugitive task force tracked Ambrosia to the Netherlands late last year and had been working with Dutch authorities to get an arrest warrant.

Ambrosia was a well-known trumpet player in the Charleston area who left the country in January 2004, telling a friend he had a three-year deal in Europe.

A state grand jury indicted Ambrosia in May 2004, accusing him of being involved in a drug ring that distributed cocaine in Charleston County. Ambrosia was accused of buying a half-kilo of cocaine, a trafficking offense that carries a maximum 25-year prison term.
