WIS' Craig Melvin wins Emmy

(Columbia) June 19, 2006 - WIS' Craig Melvin beat some stiff competition this year in the Emmy category for news anchors.

Carol Sbarge of WSB in Atlanta, Brenda Wood of WXIA in Atlanta, and Carol Goldsmith of WYFF in Greenville all earned nominations.

While his viewers and co-workers are congratulating him, Craig has a few thank-you's to share:

"I am delighted about being recognized by my peers. Recognition for your work is always great, but it's even greater when you're recognized for work you enjoy so much. I am blessed with a fantastic job, great colleagues I respect and admire, and viewers who allow me into their homes every evening to tell them what's happened in their community that day. Sometimes I feel like pinching myself to make sure this is all real.

Although the Emmy judges recognized Melvin for his work as an anchor, he goes far beyond those duties at WIS.

Craig has also created a number of in-depth series for News 10, including his "School Swap"  and "Teacher Swap" series. Recently, Craig ventured onto the streets of Columbia to learn more about the problems of the homeless in the Midlands by living as one of them in the series "Our Hidden Neighbors."

Craig reaches out to WIStv.com users as well, with a blog covering his point of view on some of the current issues.

Melvin also hosts Awareness, which airs on Sundays at 10:00am.
