Irmo High School student killed in crash

(Irmo) February 17, 2006 - Grief counselors are at Irmo High School helping students cope with the loss of one of their classmates. Investigators say 12th grader Danielle Lawler died in a car accident Thursday afternoon after school.

The highway patrol says the accident happened on Garden Valley Lane near Bush River Road, about 10 miles north of Lexington, around 3:25pm.

A highway patrol spokesperson tells News 10 the 17-year-old was driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty and apparently lost control of the vehicle, running off the side of the road. The vehicle flipped over, and 17-year-old Danielle Lawler was ejected. She was transported by EMS to Palmetto Richland Memorial where she was pronounced dead around 6:45pm.

The highway patrol says Lawler was wearing her seatbelt.

Five other people were in the car and it was unclear whether anyone else was injured. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined, but speed is believed to be a primary contributing factor. The speed limit on the road is 25mph.

The accident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
