Evacuations underway on Colombian island ahead of storm

(Managua, Nicaragua-AP) Oct. 27, 2005 - Officials are evacuating hundreds of tourists and residents from the Colombian island of San Andres ahead of Tropical Storm Beta.

A hurricane warning has been issued for San Andres and the island of Providencia. Beta appears on track to become the 13th hurricane of the already record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season within 24 hours.

At 11pm Eastern time, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Beta's maximum sustained winds were 65 miles per hour. Beta was located about 35 miles southeast of San Andres and moving toward the north at two miles per hour.

San Andres sits 110 miles off Nicaragua's coast and Beta is expected to continue on and hit mainland Nicaragua as a strong Category Two hurricane by Sunday.
