Brookland-Cayce battles with city over football stadium location

(Cayce) Oct. 14, 2005 - At Brookland-Cayce High School, it's the home team versus the home town. The winner gets to decide what happens on an open field and parking lot off Knox Abbot Drive.

Lexington School District Two owns the property and wants to build a new football stadium on it. In July, City Council rejected the district's proposal.

After months of trying to work with the city, Lexington Two is ready to take action. Attorney Jake Moore is candid, "I fully anticipate that there will be a lawsuit filed by the middle to the end of next week."

Moore says they'll ask the court to require the city to give them a zoning and building permit.

Cayce's city attorney says the district's proposal is still on the table and that a rush to the courts would not be in anyone's best interest. But according to Moore, "There's simply no additional time to wait."

Moore says they need to get the ball rolling because the bond money to build the stadium will soon expire, "We still have no explanation at all as simply what's wrong with it. We wish someone would tell us."

City manager Johnny Sharp tells News 10 parking space and traffic congestion are concerns since Knox Abbot is Cayce's main street. Sharp adds that businesses in the area don't favor the idea.

In June the city offered the district an alternative. It would help pay for a new stadium if it was built near the school's current stadium.

Moore says tracking down space for expansion is a problem. But he hopes the district and Cayce can score on an agreement.

Cayce City Council will review the district's proposal again at a meeting on October 28th. Meanwhile, on Monday the school district will decide whether or not to sue the city.
