COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

When Fred Watson enters HRC Arena this season, he’ll be sitting on the visitors' bench.

The former Benedict head coach was announced as the new leading man for the Miles men’s basketball team.

Watson served as the Tigers head coach for 16 seasons. During that time, Benedict captured five SIAC championships and clinched eight berths in the NCAA Division II Tournament. A five-time SIAC Coach of the Year, Watson led Benedict to a 21-10 overall record while going 11-8 in conference contests finishing fourth in the Eastern Division. Overall, Watson has a 320-150 record as head coach

The Benedict alum now takes over a Golden Bears program that was 7-20 last season and has tallied 32 victories in the last three seasons combined.

Watson issued the following statement:

“I would like to thank Dr. Swinton and Coach Washington for seeing something in me at an early age and giving me the opportunity to lead the Benedict Men Basketball team. I would also like to thank President Artis for her support from the first moment she arrived on campus.

To all my players that I have been blessed to have the opportunity to coach and coaches I have the opportunity to work with, I send a special thanks to all of them.

Benedict College and the City of Columbia have been absolutely incredible to me and I appreciate the support everyone has given me over the years.”
