Whether you enjoy spending the holiday barbecuing, cutting open a juicy watermelon, watching firework shows or just picnicking and spending time with your family, there are plenty of events going on in our community for you to participate in.

Here are a few events in the area:

The Annual Farm Bureau Watermelon Classic takes place at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum on the 4th of July at 7:30 a.m. with a 5k Run/Walk and the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of MS One Mile Wellness/Fun Run. This yearly event is fun for the whole family and a great way to kick off your 4th of July holiday.

Participants will line up from the Broadmeadow UMC parking lot for the parade, and then return for a potluck. Hotdogs are provided, but bring a side, drink, or dessert to share.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST: Hot like a firecracker for Independence Day! Expect a typical July afternoon with highs in the lower 90s; feels like temperatures near 100-105°. Scattered storms may develop through the afternoon, though there shouldn't be a complete washout of your plans. Be mindful of the skies throughout the day and if the thunder roars, head indoors! For fireworks plans, we'll keep the mention of a few showers through the early evening hours amid variably cloudy skies.

Last but not least, don't forget to send us some of your fun photos from your Fourth of July celebrations! Show us how you spent your holiday by sending us your pictures at sendit@wlbt.com . Your photos could end up on our Facebook page!
